This is the family winemaking project of Dave Bicknell and Nicky Harris. Dave is a veteran of 23 Yarra vintages (Oakridge, de Bortoli) and three French seasons taking in Burgundy, Alsace and Beaujolais for Louis Latour, Paul Blanck & Chateau Du Bluizard.
Origin – Sourced from the 1988 planted Stewart vineyard at the top of Price’s Rd, Gladysdale. We have leased and farm the vineyard ourselves, which we are slowly restoring to full production. With poor flowering, the crop load was only 0.8t/Ha.
The vineyard is at 360m ASL, some 160m higher in elevation than Willowlake. It is north facing and in the deep red volcanic soils with much of the vineyard on a 25-30° slope. Not easy, but great for calf muscles. Technical – Handpicked and wholebunch pressed, natural fermentation – left on fermentation lees for 11 months and racked directly to bottle without fining or filtration. Handbottled in March 2015.
“It’s started to emerge from it’s chrysalis…and I am genuinely taken. To me it speaks quite clearly of it’s site at the top of Prices Road in Gladysdale. Flint and minerality more than sun and stone fruit. Everything cantilevered against a fine line of acidity.” – Dave Bicknell
“0.7t/ha after dreadful conditions during flowering, whole bunch-pressed, fermented in a single used puncheon, no mlf, matured on lees for 11 months, 45 dozen made. ’14 may have been a go along to get along vintage for pinot noir, but it produced excellent chardonnays in the Yarra Valley. It has depth and power, strongly reminiscent of top White Burgundy. As a matter of record: it all sold within a week of release in late ’16.” – 95 Points James Halliday
