2017 celebrates a historic milestone with the Rosé of Virginia being made for 28 consecutive years by Charles Melton. Rated by James Halliday as one of the leading producers of Rosé, Charles Melton Rosé of Virginia is a benchmark of this style and not one to be missed!
A number of key techniques are important to the Rose of Virginia. Cold soak on skins followed by clear settling of the juice helps heighten the aromatics, and co-fermentation of the major varieties delivers the superb hue. A six to eight week cool alcoholic fermentation is followed, before immediate bottling to retain as much youthful zest and life as possible.
Paler, although only slightly so, than the 2016. A lovely pink tinged bright hue with crystal clarity. A gorgeous rose petal and Turkish delight nose with just a hint of the faintest cardamom. One of the most aromatically pretty Rose of Virginia’s for a long time. The palate is a lovely amalgam of guava and pear flavours with some gentle acidity and a touch of fine tannin to keep it grown up. Has settled beautifully since bottling and is ready for a chill and some good company!
““Brief skin contact followed crushing, the wine then made from free-run juice. Both the bouquet and palate ride on a magic carpet of exotic red berry fruits that take this rosé from the bonds of earthly flavours. Charles Melton has long been a master in the dark arts of producing rosés that are gorgeous with food or for simply enjoying a glass on a spring day.” – 95 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday
