The grapes are grown on the Meadowbank vineyard, approximately 60 kms northwest of Hobart. Its rugged topography is bounded by the fast flowing, pristine waters of the Derwent River.
The Chardonnay and Pinot vineyard patches selected by Dawson James were planted in 1989. Consequently vine-age plays an important part in the development of flavour and the balance of the fruit.
The vineyard is at an elevation of 70 metres above the river and has a north-easterly aspect, optimal for capturing sunlight and ripening the grapes.
Soils range from brown loams to sandy loams over structured clays and sandstone rock. They are of a ‘devigorating’ nature, contributing to balanced growth and good vine structure. Yields are controlled to less than 6 tonnes per hectare, with the pinot noir managed to one bunch per shoot.

Trophy – Best Chardonnay – Decanter World Wine Awards 2019
Trophy – Best Chardonnay – Tasmanian Wine Show 2017
97 Points & Top 100 Wines of 2017 James Halliday
“Trophy at the Tasmanian Wine Show ’17, thanks to its super-intense bouquet and super-long palate. Sometimes chardonnays can wear their acidity on their sleeve, but here it couples with a complex display of stone and citrus fruit with a garland of quality oak, finishing with bright (not excessive) acidity.” – 97 Points & Top 100 Wines of 2017 James Halliday
“In a great year in general for Chardonnay wines in our Best In Show selection, this Tasmanian example impressed our judges with its assurance, its grain and its darting yet ripe and resonant cool-climate style. It’s a bright green-gold in colour. A little reduction when first poured soon clears to reveal a tempting spectrum of lemon, dessert apple and early-season nectarine fruits with understated creamy wealth from its barrel-fermentation. On the palate, it is ample and round yet fresh and vivid, the purity of its Derwent Valley origins singing out without any winery forcing. A Tasmanian thoroughbred which underscores the potential of its site.” – Decanter
