Derwent Estate is a family owned and operated wine business situated just 20 minutes North of Hobart – the largest city in Tasmania. Located at 42 degrees south latitude this is genuine Cool climate Viticulture. Tasmania is rapidly gaining a reputation as Australia’s premier wine producing area.
Picked at flavour ripeness, the grapes were whole bunch pressed with only the free-run juice retained. It went straight to 100% French oak for barrel fermentation involving two yeast strains and 50% wild fermentation. This wine had 100% malolactic fermentation and all barrels received battonage fortnightly during the nine months in barrel.
“Light yellow colour. A reserved wine with a shy spicy aromas, showing notes of funky sulfides, while the palate is very restrained, with delicacy and refinement. It tastes like a subtle, low-alcohol wine, which should age well and fill out with more time. Chalky aromas and chalky texture. Fine, tight and long. A superb chardonnay.” – 96 Points Huon Hooke
“The slightly flinty bouquet sets the antennae waving. Utterly exceptional purity and great line, length and balance. It could come from anywhere, especially Chablis/White Burgundy. Beautiful. Trophies, including Best White Wine of Show, Tasmanian Wine Show ’15.” – 97 Points James Halliday
