97 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday
The Magnolia 1896 Shiraz is sourced from the oldest vines on their Magnolia Road vineyard planted in 1896. The vines grow on deep granitic sand over clay soils at an elevation of 315 metres. The block is run organically using only organic fertilisers and fungicides and the weeds controlled by sheep, mowing and mechanical knifing. The vines are detailed rod and spur pruned and shoot and bunch thinned to control yield and quality. All the fruit is handpicked and hand sorted prior to open fermentation and after 15 months the wine was gently hand racked from barrel with no fining or filtration. The combination of organic farming and 121 year old vines has resulted in a wine of brilliant fruit purity, depth and complexity.
“From the 1896 planting, wild-fermented, matured in used French puncheons. The sheer power and intensity of this full-bodied wine neutralises any downside from the high alcohol , the overall flavour and mouthfeel on the savoury side, not jammy. Flows across the mouth adding touches of licorice and jet black fruits.” – 97 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday
