The Côtes du Rhône blend. 19 different grapes make up Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines, with only 3 that define the style. Grenache, Shiraz and Mataro.
Ellipsis, 75% Old Bush Vine Grenache, the lighter of the three wines, offers a raspberry, cinnamon spice and Ruby Red grapefruit flavours. 13% Old Vine Barossa Valley Shiraz adds the darker fruit flavors of blueberry & plum. Interestingly blending shiraz adds a lot of up-front flavor and boldness. 12% Mataro from McLaren Flat, brings floral aromas, a savoury element and a persistent finish.
Rested in 100% French Oak, 10% new for 9 months has produced a wine is beautifully structured. A fruit driven wine that delivers with integrity, class and complexity in a very approachable style.
“Smart to source 60+yo bushvine grenache from Blewitt Springs (75%), with added complexity ex 13% Barossa Valley shiraz and 12% McLaren Vale mataro, all open-fermented, hand-plunged and matured in used French hogsheads. Bright, full colour, the bouquet very fragrant and fruity, the medium-bodied palate supple and very long, red and purple fruits holding sway throughout, the tannins fine and soft, the oak barely perceptible. Lovely wine, now or in 20 years.” Drink to 2038 – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday
