After 42 years making wine for premium wineries including Penfolds, Seppelts, Krondorf and as Chief Winemaker for Mildara Blass, winning the Jimmy Watson Trophy, numerous show trophies and medals, Mike and his wife Judy had a desire to leave the corporate side of the wine business and get in touch with the land by growing the best grapes possible in the premium Adelaide Hills region
The 2016 Vintage in the Adelaide Hills produced a style of wine with great fruit intensity. Merlot always does well in Mike’s vineyard which is 500 metres above sea level.
This wine is all berries blackberry, raspberry and strawberry fruit but with some dusty spices as well It has a round luscious mouth feel and good length of palate. It was matured in American and French oak.
“Few producers put a tick in the value box as often as Mike Press Wines. Plenty of fruit, well-integrated oak, a good drag of (ripe) tannin and a juicy finish. This is merlot, open and accessible but sans compromise. You get flavour and softness but you also get structural integrity; there’s nothing gloopy about this. Apple juice acidity is the only distraction but it’s offset by tangy notes of strawberry and redcurrant; in any case, everything else here is in a good place.” – 90 Points Campbell Mattinson
