Crafted from the world’s oldest urban vineyard, the Marion Grenache Shiraz is incredibly unique.
The Marion Vineyard is now well over 100 years old, and is the world’s oldest urban, commercial vineyard. It is owned by the Marion City Council, but we’re proud to be the custodians of these impressive vines, part of only a few tiny vineyards remaining in the once-renowned ‘Garden of Adelaide’ district. The village of Marion was first settled by Europeans in the 1830’s, and the rich, fertile soils of the area produced copious vegetables, almonds, and stone-fruits – and was planted with highly sought-after vineyards. However, by the 1950’s population growth and the demand for housing meant that much of the area was converted to residential land. Luckily, the Marion Vineyard remains – an iconic reminder of the history of the district and the quality of the produce for which it was famous.
“From the 110yo vineyard owned by the city of Marion, but leased to Patritti since ’06 in recognition of its long association with grapegrowing in the region. A 90/10% blend, hand-picked, crushed and destemmed, open-fermented, 7 days on skins including 1 day cold soak, matured for 6 months in a 60/40% mix of American and French puncheons (10% new). A rich, deep-seated mouthful of succulent red and purple fruits sustained by fine, yet firm, tannins. The Rhone Valley would be proud of this.” – 96 Points & Special Value Wine James Halliday
