Barossa Valley Wine Show 2020
Founded in 1979, Peter Lehmann Wines brings unmatched diversity, uniqueness and quality from more than 800 hand-tended vineyards across the length and breadth of all 14 Barossa sub-regions. The quality of Peter Lehmann Wines are a testament to their relationships, allowing them access to the region’s finest grapes.
The Portrait wines embody the original promise Peter Lehmann made to the growers to make wines that show the true character of the Barossa. Collectively, these wines present a portrait of the region through a selection of the traditional varietals that made it famous.
With winter of 2018 seeing only 77% of the long term average rainfall it was expected that 2019 vintage would see lower yields. However, signifcant frost events soon after budburst in late September and again in early November caused widespread damage across the region, with many losing more than 50% of their potential crop. The growing season remained extremely dry with a late November hailstorm adding to the list of challenges. After a very warm January, February and March settled towards average temperatures and remained dry. The small crops were nearly all harvested by the end of March, one of the earliest vintages on record. Whilst yields were very low, the quality of 2019 reds is exceptional with super intense colour and flavour being characteristic of the vintage.
Medium intensity, bright purple with a vibrant crimson edge. The nose is classic Barossa Cabernet Sauvignon – blackberry, cassis and menthol with a touch of vanilla and dark chocolate oak in the background. The palate is medium bodied, showing rich blackcurrant, mocha and cigar box upfront, with a light flurry of tannin on the fnish.
