When two good mates get together, one the Chief Winemaker with a major winery from the Barossa Valley and with his own vineyard, the other with a passion for wine, the inevitable had to happen and Purple Hands Wines was created. Craig Stansborough and Mark Slade started Purple Hands in 2006 with a humble start, making just 100 dozen in the first vintage. Just over a tonne of hand picked Shiraz was crushed and barrel fermented in Craig’s shed and then came the hard part, to find a name for the label.
Vibrant colour leads to a super bright nose. A complex array of aromas entice the nose to come back for more, with red liquorice, spice and earth showing through. The palate is agile and lively with a great balance of fruit sweetness and fine tannin that gives you a wine of great flavor and texture while maintaining great elegance. Mataro (52%), Grenache (26%) and rest in Shiraz.
“The texture is creamy and soft and the flavours are juicy and inviting. That’s pretty much all you need to know because it drinks like a charm as a result. It tastes of redcurrant and raspberry with earth, clove and smoky oak inputs. There’s a touch more tannin than you might expect, in a good way, but the fruit takes it in its stride. Joyous drinking.” – 93 Points Campbell Mattinson
“52/26/22% forms the blend, and the result is harmony in a glass. Vivid crimson, bright red fruit, Middle Eastern spices, earthy and a silkiness to the full palate, even if there’s grip to the tannin. Effortless.” – 95 Points & Special Value Wine Jane Faulkner for James Hallidays Wine Companion
