Trophy – Best Single Vineyard Shiraz – McLaren Vale Wine Show

96 Points James Halliday

Planted in 1892 the vineyard is amongst the oldest in the region, indeed in Australia. Situated at the back of the Old Hut Block, the Shiraz is on original rootstock grown in grey loams over old river clay with underlying limestone. The vineyard lies at the southern end of the McLaren Vale strip and contains some of the best soils in the district, evidenced in the wines year after year. The essential element in the making of Centurion is the critical quality selection of the fruit from the 1892 plantings that form the backbone of this wine.

Full ripe and superbly varietal Shiraz highlighted with integrated French oak to show cedar, vanilla and mocha characters. Full bodied palate of great length, but tempered with fine, long tannins to give finesse, elegance and style.

“Ribs of tannin roll through sweet, well balanced, silken fruit. The modesty of this wine is beautiful in itself. It tastes of mocha, dark cherry, earth, musk and ripe, fleshy plum, though it’s the seamlessness, the length, and the rumble of tannin that elevate it into the higher echelons.” – 95 Points Campbell Mattinson
“121 Year Old Vine. From a single estate vineyard block planted in 1892, and with a great line of top vintages dating back to 1998, harmony and elegance always in the forefront. The use of French oak (rather than American) helps its cause, for the dark fruits easily exert their ascendancy over the tannin and oak, the latter two simply providing gentle structural framework, and lengthening the finish.” – 96 Points James Halliday
