The vines in the HVD vineyard were planted in 1908 and form the ‘Sign Post Block. The wine is floral fruit in youth, which moves towards biscuity characters with age. The palate is generally softer bodied with smoother acids than the Vat 1 and Belford Semillons.
2014 was another strong Semillon vintage in the Hunter Valley. Dry, warm conditions that were similar to 2003 meant cropping levels were much smaller than average and produced wines with robust flavours and softer acids.
After a relatively cool fermentation, the wine spent a minimal time on yeast lees before being bottled early to maintain its freshness. No oak fermentation or maturation.
A fuller, softer incarnation of HVD Semillon showing lifted white flower and citrus aromatics. The palate shows good length a great balance with it’s clean, soft acid structure.
“Bright, light yellow colour, the bouquet likewise fresh and vital, showing fresh green herb, lemon and lemongrass nuances. It’s delicate, refreshing and restrained in the mouth, focused and intense, with mouth-watering, elevated acidity in seamless harmony with the whole of the wine. Utterly delicious. And it appears to have a long and bright future in front of it.” – 95 Points & 5 Stars Huon Hooke
“Lemon, vanilla, floral notes with the signature HVD lime tucked in nicely. Super clear fruit, beautiful soft line of acid draws it very long, a light flintiness shapes it up. Super long drizzled lime finish. Impeccable, and even as a baby wine, already great to drink.” – 95+ Points Gary Walsh, Winefront.
