The fruit for the 2011 Vat 9 Shiraz was sourced from Tyrrell’s super premium vineyards on the Ashman’s property with an average vine age of 50 years. Predominately from the Weinkeller and Short Flat vineyards.
“Bright, clear crimson-purple; the grapes come from the oldest and best blocks on the estate Ashmans Vineyard, with its striking red volcanic clay soils; hand-picked and fermented in open vats before maturation for 16 months in new and used 2700-litre French casks. However good Johnno’s Shiraz may be, this wine has greater intensity, drive and length, with persistent fine tannins and positive but balanced oak.” – 97 Points James Halliday
“Chocolate box, mixed berries, touch of spicy oak richness and subtle menthol and pepper top notes. It’s gentle and composed with a lovely creamy mouth-feel, balanced acidity and a little chop of tannin pulling through on the finish. A very good Vat 9 – plump and delicious. Age-worthy of course. “ – 94 Points Gary Walsh
“Medium to full red/purple colour; good hue but light. Sweet red cherry aromas combined with tarry, smoky mineral nuances. The palate is medium to full-bodied, lean and taut, with elegance and precision, underpinned by lively acidity and fine, soft tannins. Terrific flavour intensity and focus; long-lasting finish. High potential for the future, and delicious now.” – 95 Points Huon Hooke
