The real excitement in Champagne is from the small artisan producers in Cotes des Blanc. Charles and Emmanuel Fourny from Vertus are at the forefront of that excitement. They produce fabulous Cuvees of ridiculously good quality. This is beautiful Champagne from salt of the earth, hard working people and as good as it gets for the special moments.
The Soil is redzine over chalk. The Chardonnay grapes come from several plots on the Les Mont-Ferrés (Vertus ler Cru). The fruit from this site gives good concentration and produces quite aromatic juices and resulting base wine. Slopes face South and South-East giving optimal maturing conditions. Average age of the vines is 40.
Hand-picked. Pure expression of 100% Chardonnay from Vertus. Blend of selected plots from harvests. 20% of Reserve wines from old vintages to give complexity as well as consistency of style. On tirage for 2 ½ years. Dosage is 6 grams / litre.
“Veuve Fourny is a small family-owned estate business offering great value for money. Three vintages plus older reserve wines spend 2½ years on tirage, with a low disgorgement dosage. A flowery bouquet with citrus zest, hints of spice and toast; a long, intense palate with some nutty/biscuit notes before a vivid, fresh finish. This is a lovely, lissom Blanc de Blancs” – 95 Points; James Halliday, Weekend Australian
“Emmanuel and Charles-Henry Fourny craft wines of great purity from their old, organic vines in the premier cru village of Vertus at the southern end of Champagne’s Cote des Blancs. Beach-fresh, linear and very fine, with white peach, crunchy apple, taut lemon fruit and salty minerality. ” – 94 Points Tyson Stelzer The Champagne Guide
